Chrome & IE: Unable to open downloaded assessment results from Grade Center

In Google Chrome and Internet Explorer an error occurs when downloading Test or Survey results from the Grade Center.  This error causes the downloaded file to not save with the correct naming convention, which makes it impossible to open.  For example, if you choose to download the results as a .CSV file the file name should be "<testname>.download.csv", but the file will save as "download."  In order to open the file, you will need to re-name it according to the correct naming convention after downloading it.

Here is a step-by-step guide for downloading results with the work-around:

  1. Select Download Results in the chevron menu of a test or survey in the Grade Center

  2. Choose either the Tab or Comma delimeter and the desired format of results and attempts to download, then click the Click to download results button

  3. Windows Operating System: Open Windows Explorer, open your downloads folder, and find the file downloaded (it will be named "download").  Right click on the file, and select Rename.  Rename the file <test name>.download.<extension>.  If you downloaded a Comma-delimited file then the extension will be .csv.  If you downloaded a tab-delimited file then the extension will be .txt.

If using a Mac operating System: Open Finder, open your downloads folder, and find the file downloaded (it will be named "download"). Select the downloaded file, click the gear shift icon in Finder, and then select get info. Under the "name and extension" text box, rename the file <test name>.download.<extension>.  If you downloaded a Comma-delimited file then the extension will be .csv.  If you downloaded a tab-delimited file then the extension will be .txt. After renaming the file, press return on the keyboard.  If a dialog box pops up asking if you want to add the extension to the end of the name, select Add.

  4. Now, you can open the file in Excel.
